Saturday, November 19th we will be partnering with Here's Life Inner City ( www.hlicnyc.org) to pack "Boxes of Love" with Thanksgiving fare for those in need in New York City.
According to an article in the NY Times, the poverty barometer in New York City measured $30,000 annual income for a family of four in 2008. The federal measure was $22K. This is because of the high cost of housing in the city. People aren’t necessarily losing their jobs in the midst of the recession, but are moving down the job ladder. Bottom line—around one in five working families in NYC earns below the poverty line.
What does a hungry person look like to you? Isn’t it difficult to discern which of our friends or neighbors are struggling these days if they are taking the subway 9 to 5 like the rest of us? God’s heart for us tells us we are loved regardless if we are in prison, a homeless refugee or a middle class citizen.
There’s a great opportunity to emulate God’s heart of compassion by assisting these people in our community. People from all walks of life get together every year at Here’s Life Inner City around Thanksgiving to pack thousands of cartons containing food, clothing and even small toys. Last year a group of friends got together and had a blast at the warehouse listening to music and working shoulder-to-shoulder while assembling gift cartons and packing them on an assembly line.
